Our History

AMAAD began as a grassroots effort in 2005, when founder Dr. Carl Highshaw envisioned an organization that unapologetically served the unique culture, challenges, and brilliance of South Los Angeles. By 2015, AMAAD had formally launched, delivering programs rooted in cultural pride, lived experience, and healing justice.
Over the past decade, AMAAD has grown into a trusted anchor institution, providing transitional housing, behavioral health support, reentry programs, and leadership training.
